Reflections on My 2024 Jersey Sport Chair Application

In August 2024, I put myself forward for the role of Chair of Jersey Sport. My application was not successful, and since then a new Chair has been appointed who enjoys my full support.

I have always been an enthusiastic supporter of Jersey Sport and its vision for athletes, coaching, participation, and inclusion across the Island. The articles listed below were originally written as part of my application, capturing what I believed to be important at the time.

Out of respect for the independence and vision of the newly appointed Chair, I removed these reflections shortly after the appointment. I did not want to appear to second-guess their decisions or suggest an alternative direction.

Now, with time having passed and Jersey Sport firmly established under its new leadership, I feel it is useful to revisit these notes. They represent a snapshot of my thinking at the time: some ideas may still resonate, others may not have stood the test of time. Either way, I believe it is valuable to share them openly.

These reflections are not a criticism of the current Chair or board. The articles remain exactly as I drafted them before the board was in place, and therefore cannot be commentary on their work. Instead, they serve as a record of my perspective at that moment—open to debate, disagreement, or even inspiration.

I hope you find the notes below thought-provoking. Even if you do not agree with them, they may still be useful in sparking ideas and discussion.

Coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the 'here and now' rather than on the distant past or future. Good coaches believe that the individual always has ideas and opportunities to resolve whatever is holding them back but understands that they may need help to define their goals, set their path, and achieve their success. Coaching is about listening, reflecting, asking questions and unlocking YOUR potential.
