About

Zone 7 is a site where I’ve gathered valuable resources for coaching and performance, many of which come from respected authorities, while others are based on my own experiences in competition. The goal is to provide a variety of tools that anyone can use. You can pick and choose the elements that suit your training, program, goals, and ambitions without being overly prescriptive. My approach to coaching is centered on serving you and your goals, recognizing that it’s a process of co-creation, development, and delivery. It’s not about me being directive—I'm not the one standing on the podium; I’ve already had my turn. The idea is to help you find the tools, templates, techniques, and training resources that will enable you to succeed. This must be a collaborative process that fits your lifestyle, goals, ambitions, and circumstances.

The name "Zone 7" comes from a humorous comment made during training. We often use training zones to manage our efforts: Zone 2 and 3 build endurance, Zone 4 focuses on higher performance, and Zone 5 represents race pace. After a particularly tough race, someone jokingly asked, “So, where were you? Zone 7?” It became an inside joke that I did my training and racing at Zone 7 because of my intense commitment. In reality, though, much of my training was spent in Zones 2 and 3, building the engine I needed to turn on during races. That’s the story behind Zone 7.

The mission of Zone 7 is simple: to help you make your boat go faster. This includes looking at you, the boat, your circumstances, the people around you, and considering policies, practices, procedures, habits, and goals.

My values are rooted in co-creation, collaboration, and empowerment. I strongly believe in agency and lean towards data-driven feedback. I value both empirical and qualitative feedback, as long as it’s objective and positively focused on improvement, rather than assigning blame. Every session is an opportunity to learn, and often, the most significant learning comes from things that didn’t go as planned. A positive mindset is essential to this process, as constant learning leads to improvement. This ties into the concept of “free speed,” which emphasizes technical competence, managing equipment, and pacing oneself effectively.

Coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the 'here and now' rather than on the distant past or future. Good coaches believe that the individual always has ideas and opportunities to resolve whatever is holding them back but understands that they may need help to define their goals, set their path, and achieve their success. Coaching is about listening, reflecting, asking questions and unlocking YOUR potential.
